Legacy in Tunes

The folk music of Rajasthan’s Manganiyar community has echoed through the deserts of Jaisalmer for centuries. Since the collapse of royal patronage post Independence, dwindling audiences, and urban migration for jobs, these rich oral traditions that form the cultural heritage of India are vanishing.

Behind the intangible folk music heritage, are the lives of 25,000 Manganiyars, who find themselves disconnected from their art form, traditions, and a way of life.

Among them is Chananji Khan, a 73-year-old Surmandal player — the last surviving artist who has perfected art of playing the 36-string instrument.

His story defines resilience, survival, and an undying commitment to music.

LEGACY IN TUNES captures his living heritage by following Chananji’s journey, his bond with son Bhersi, and their efforts to keep a dying tradition alive in a rapidly changing world.
